Lanning Macfarland Jr. Named 2017 Freedom Award Winner

(Chicago, IL) — Law Bulletin Publishing Company is pleased to announce that its Chairman, Lanning Macfarland Jr., will be awarded the 43rd annual Freedom Award.

The John Marshall Law School Alumni Association presents its Freedom Award to honorees who, through their thinking, accomplishments or profession, reflect the basic tenets of freedom. The award recognizes their work, high ethical standards, efforts to help mankind and initiatives to improve society and our nation.

Macfarland oversaw the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin, the oldest daily courts newspaper, and led the Law Bulletin Publishing Company, the oldest family-owned business in Chicago, for more than five decades. During that time, he expanded the company’s products, boosted advertising revenues and revised its finances. He also vastly improved the editorial product, as the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin newspaper and its sister publication, Chicago Lawyer magazine, have won more than 60 local and national journalism awards in the last 20 years.

Macfarland is a past director of the National Newspaper Association, director and president of the American Court and Commercial Newspapers trade organization and director and president of the Illinois Press Association (IPA). He received the IPA’s Distinguished Service award in 1996 for his determined efforts involving protection of public notice. In addition, Macfarland served on the Illinois Press Foundation, the non-profit arm of the IPA.

Macfarland will be honored at an awards reception on May 18, 2017, to be held at the Chicago Cultural Center. The Alumni Association also will acknowledge former Dean John E. Corkery, Professor Ann Lousin, Hon. Charles P. Kocoras and alumnus Mauro Glorioso (’97) with Distinguished Service Awards.
