Chicago Lawyer Wins Prestigious Kogan, Lisagor Awards for 2018

(Chicago, IL) — Law Bulletin Media is pleased to announce that reporter David Thomas and designer Jennifer Jenkins have won the Chicago Bar Association’s Herman Kogan Media Award for “Stung: A Chicago Lawyer report.” Jenkins separately won a Peter Lisagor Award for Exemplary Journalism from the Chicago Headline Club, also for her work on “Stung: A Chicago Lawyer report.”

Since 1989, the Kogan Awards have been presented annually by the Chicago Bar Association to recognize journalists who cover the legal community, courts, judges, police and public officials who administer justice. The awards were given out at a luncheon on May 10, 2018 at Petterino’s in Chicago.

Named for the longtime Chicago Daily News Washington bureau chief, the Peter Lisagor Awards for Exemplary Journalism are presented by The Headline Club—the Chicago chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists—each year to honor the best journalism in Illinois and northwest Indiana. The awards were announced on May 11, 2018 at the Union League Club of Chicago.

The article on stingrays—military surveillance equipment that local police departments can use to snoop on suspects’ cellphones—was published online-only for Chicago Lawyer magazine, a sister publication under Law Bulletin Media. Thomas’ award came after nine months of work digging through records, sending FOIA requests and tracking down military intelligence experts.

“What we tried to highlight with this story is how tenuous the law is surrounding technology like stingrays, which is high-end cell-spying equipment that was developed for the U.S. military but departments like Chicago have access to,” said Thomas during his acceptance speech. “This story really tried to highlight how quickly technology developed and how slow the law can be both in the legislature as well as the courtroom.”

Jenkins was recognized for a special infographic she created to accompany the stingray article. She also received a Peter Lisagor Award for Exemplary Journalism from the Chicago Headline Club for her work on the Chicago Lawyer print magazine, winning Best Design in the specialty/trade category.

The Chicago Lawyer October 2017 story, “David’s Goliaths: What the defense bar needs to know about investor-funded lawsuits,” by editor Paul Dailing was a finalist for Best Business or Consumer Reporting; Chicago Daily Law Bulletin movie critic Rebecca Ford was a finalist for Best Commentary; and Chicago Lawyer was a finalist for General Excellence in Print Journalism in the nondaily newspaper, magazine or newspaper magazine section category.
